A
video news release is raw tv footage, expertly
shot, distributed free of charge to broadcasters
on behalf of a client. The stations can edit this
material quickly and easily. Inevitably, newsgathering
resources are strictly limited. This means that
a station cannot cover all the interesting stories
occurring each day in its area. Even if your event
attracts the attention of a reporter, the newsdesk
may not have a film crew available to cover it.
A VNR is the solution. It allows
the journalist to broadcast a superb report without
the expense, time, and trouble of having to film
the story. Sometimes the tv company’s library
can provide background pictures, but they can be
old and tired, and this footage may not contain
enough editing shots (called “cutaways”)
to allow the journalist to produce the kind of edited
report the story deserves.
In this case, a VNR can be a real help in giving
the reporter exactly what s/he needs to produce
a visually and exciting accurate report. The big
advantage for clients is that they can approve the
material before it is distributed, to ensure that
the pictures and interview extracts conform to the
organisation’s image.
